01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 850 Racer Berlinetta, a unique coupé version of the 850 Spider designed by Bertone, represents a distinctive chapter in the history of Fiat’s successful 850 model. Produced from 1964 to 1973, the Fiat 850 was a versatile vehicle with its mechanicals evolved from the earlier Fiat 600. It was available in various body styles, including Sedan, Coupé, Minivan, and Convertible, catering to a wide range of preferences. The 850 Spider, a convertible version designed by Bertone, was particularly popular, with around 150,000 units produced. However, less widely known is the Fiat 850 Berlinetta, a hardtop coupé variant created by Bertone that diverged from the typical coupé designs produced by Fiat. The Berlinetta essentially began life as a Spider but was fitted with a hardtop, resulting in a distinct and elegant coupé. Only about 4,000 Berlinettas were built, primarily for the American market, which added to their exclusivity. Due to the limited production and the passage of time, many of these vehicles have not survived in good condition. It is estimated that only a few dozen of these unique coupés remain today. The Fiat 850 Berlinetta Racer stands out for its rarity and unique design, marking it as a significant but lesser-known variant of the Fiat 850 range. Its scarcity and distinctive styling make it a notable collector’s item and a cherished piece of automotive history.

Historical research note

The same Bertone advertisement states that Racer was also produced in a Convertibile version and prints a factory price of Lire 1,175,000 for both models.
