01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 519S Torpedo Sport Speciale by Carrozzeria Bertone represents one of the rarest and most historically significant examples of Italian automotive craftsmanship from the interwar period. Based on the short-wheelbase (S) variant of Fiat’s 519 chassis, the model was produced in extremely limited numbers—estimates suggest a run of no more than 25 examples—specifically configured for performance-oriented touring. The 519S combined a 6.8-liter overhead-valve inline six-cylinder engine with a robust chassis designed for sporting use, offering refined power delivery and capable long-distance motoring characteristics typical of high-end European grand tourers of the late 1920s. Carrozzeria Bertone, at the time still a relatively young design and coachbuilding firm, was commissioned to body a small number of these special chassis. The Torpedo Sport Speciale was distinguished by its low-slung proportions, tapering rear deck, and streamlined fenders, expressing the transitional aesthetic between the formal touring cars of the early 1920s and the more aerodynamic experimentation that would follow in the 1930s. In contrast to the standard factory-bodied 519 variants, Bertone’s design emphasized lightness and sportiness, with an open four-seat layout and minimal ornamentation. Despite its advanced mechanical and stylistic features, the car remained virtually unknown for decades. For much of the 20th century, the 519S Torpedo Sport Speciale was believed to be lost, with no surviving examples known to exist. That changed in 2001, when a single, complete car was identified and authenticated, making it the only extant example of this configuration. Its rediscovery added a vital chapter to both Fiat and Bertone’s histories, providing scholars and collectors with a rare opportunity to study and preserve an important artifact of Italian automotive development. The 519S Torpedo Sport Speciale remains a singular and irreplaceable vehicle in the context of early 20th-century European motoring.
