01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 501 Torpedo fitted with the “ballon” hardtop by Carrozzeria Bertone was a period modification aimed at increasing seasonal usability of open tourers. The “ballon” was a removable roof structure, externally covered in imitation leather and internally lined, designed to enclose the passenger compartment without altering the underlying body. This type of roof construction was developed by Giovanni Bertone during the early 1920s and was among the early forms of hardtop adaptation for touring cars. The Fiat 501 was introduced in 1919 as Fiat’s first post-war production model. It was equipped with a 1,460 cc four-cylinder engine producing 23 horsepower at 2,600 rpm. With a top speed of approximately 70 km/h, the 501 was designed for everyday use and sold in large numbers. Production lasted until 1926, with around 26,000 units built across multiple body styles. The car featured a front engine, rear-wheel drive layout, and was typically delivered as a bare chassis for external coachbuilders. Bertone’s version of the 501 incorporated the “comfort ballon” roof and added functional elements such as a winter radiator cover. The configuration allowed for year-round use while retaining the touring layout. These modifications did not alter the mechanical specifications of the base car but were intended to meet customer demand for greater protection in colder weather. This variant illustrates the cooperation between manufacturers and coachbuilders in early 20th-century Italy, where standard models were adapted for different climates and purposes. The Fiat 501 Torpedo Ballon is a documented example of such modifications.
