01 / THE STORY

History & context

Fiat 500 S Moretti was a Fiat 500 prepared by Moretti in Turin. It retained the familiar Fiat basis while receiving exterior and interior treatments specific to the coachbuilder. Its recorded specification paired Azzurro acquamarine bodywork with a two-tone beige interior. Chrome exterior elements, a custom steering wheel and specially made seat covers defined the principal details of this interpretation. The car retained the Fiat 500 identity stated in its name, expressed through a distinct combination of paint, brightwork and cabin trim.

Moretti concentrated this treatment on visible details rather than a change of model identity. The Azzurro acquamarine finish established the exterior specification, and chrome trim provided a contrasting accent. Inside, the custom steering wheel and tailored seat covers continued the same approach. Two-tone beige upholstery accompanied the exterior colour, placing colour and trim at the centre of the Fiat 500 S Moretti specification. The treatment extended across the body and passenger compartment while retaining the underlying Fiat 500 basis.

The 500 S formed part of the period practice in which Italian coachbuilders offered elaborata versions of Fiat’s compact cars. Such versions differentiated a standard model through their own combinations of trim, paint and cabin appointments. Moretti applied bright exterior detailing, special paintwork and bespoke interior components to its Fiat 500 treatment. On the 500 S, chrome elements, the custom steering wheel and specially made seat covers brought that work into both the exterior and the cabin. The Azzurro acquamarine body and two-tone beige interior remained the defining recorded finish combination.

Moretti offered more than one interpretation of the Fiat 500 range. The Fiat 500 D Moretti provided another Moretti treatment of the small Fiat, while the Fiat 500 Coupé Moretti was another Fiat 500 derivative in the company’s catalogue. The 500 S remained based on the standard model and was distinguished by its paint, interior colour scheme, chrome exterior trim, custom steering wheel and tailored seat covers. Its S designation remained attached to a Fiat 500 prepared under the Moretti name in Turin. Chrome supplied the exterior brightwork, while the cabin combined the special steering wheel, specially made covers and two-tone beige upholstery.

The recorded finish combined Azzurro acquamarine bodywork and beige interior trim rather than a separate model identity. The exterior chrome treatment contrasted with the paintwork, and the cabin fittings gave the car its own presentation within the Fiat 500 range. These details defined the 500 S specification: a Fiat-based Moretti preparation with colour, brightwork, upholstery, steering wheel and seat-cover work forming a single treatment.
