01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1500 Cabriolet Pininfarina (tipo 118G) represents a classic chapter in Fiat’s automotive history, showcasing the elegance and innovation of Italian design in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Produced from 1959 to 1963 and then from 1964 to 1966, this stylish two-door, two-passenger convertible was the successor to the Fiat 1200 Spyder, offering significant improvements in both design and performance. Crafted by the renowned design house Pininfarina and marketed by Fiat, the 1500 Cabriolet featured a front-engine, rear-drive layout that was both classic and functional. Its design was celebrated for its sleek lines and refined aesthetic, reflecting Pininfarina’s expertise in creating elegant and timeless vehicles. Over its production run, the Fiat 1500 Cabriolet achieved a total of 34,211 units, highlighting its popularity and appeal. Among the various models, the sportier versions, namely the 1500 S and 1600 S, stood out due to their enhanced performance. These variants were equipped with high-performance twin-cam engines developed by OSCA (Officine Specializzate Costruzione Automobili), renowned for their engineering excellence. The 1500 S and 1600 S collectively saw production of 3,089 units, and were especially lauded for their superior driving dynamics and increased power, making them highly sought after by car enthusiasts. The Fiat 1500 Cabriolet Pininfarina’s production concluded in 1966, with the model being replaced by the Fiat 124 Sport Spider. The 124 Sport Spider continued the legacy of Fiat’s attractive and capable convertibles, offering a new chapter in the brand’s convertible lineup. Despite its replacement, the Fiat 1500 Cabriolet remains a celebrated classic, valued for its design, performance, and the mark it left on Fiat’s rich automotive heritage. Its combination of Italian style and driving pleasure ensures that it holds a special place in the hearts of classic car aficionados.
