01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 128 Coupé Bertone, unveiled by Bertone at the 1969 Turin Motor Show, represented a visionary design. Designed by Marcello Gandini, the renowned designer behind many iconic cars, this four-seater coupé utilized Fiat 128 mechanics, blending practicality with style. The prototype showcased features that would set the standard for future people-carriers, marking it as a precursor to a design formula adopted by numerous manufacturers in subsequent years. The Fiat 128 Coupé’s design emphasized spaciousness through several key elements. Its short, sharply sloping bonnet and expansive greenhouse, characterized by large window surfaces, created an airy and open feel within the cabin. The car’s compact and short tail further enhanced this sense of interior space, making it a practical yet stylish option for families and individuals alike. Positioned among other notable designs like the Autobianchi Runabout at the same auto show, the 128 Coupé stood out with its modern lines. Its aesthetic appeal influenced the design of many 4/5-seater cars in the years that followed, highlighting its significant impact on automotive design trends. The production of the Fiat 128 Coupé was not without challenges. The widespread strikes in Italy in 1969 disrupted many industries, including automotive manufacturing. Consequently, the Fiat 128 Coupé was built by Silvercar, a company based in Caramagna, which was a regular supplier for Carrozzeria Bertone. This collaboration ensured that despite the industrial unrest, the innovative design could be brought to life and reach consumers.
