01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1100 Sport Barchetta Riva was a small sports car built in 1948 with coachwork by Carrozzeria Riva. The mechanical base came from the Fiat 1100, while tuning work was carried out by Luigi Pagani. The car was developed in the immediate postwar period, when several Italian workshops used production Fiat components as the basis for lightweight competition and sports cars. The 1100 platform offered a compact size, simple mechanical layout and good parts availability, making it suitable for small coachbuilt racing specials. Riva built a low open barchetta body with very smooth surfaces and reduced frontal area. The front end featured integrated headlamps, a wide grille with vertical bars and rounded fenders incorporated into the main body volume. The cockpit was narrow and minimal, with two small split windscreens and no fixed roof. The side profile was clean and low, with a long bonnet, simple doors and a short rounded tail. The bodywork was designed for lightness and aerodynamic efficiency rather than comfort. The wheels remained exposed in side view, but the main body was shaped as a continuous envelope, giving the car a modern appearance compared with many prewar-style Fiat specials. Mechanically, the car used a Fiat inline-four engine prepared by Luigi Pagani. The chassis layout followed the Fiat 1100 pattern, with front-engine and rear-wheel drive. The suspension and running gear were derived from the production model, adapted to suit the lighter sports body. Production appears to have been very limited. The Fiat 1100 Sport Barchetta Riva belongs to the group of postwar Italian specials built by small coachbuilders and tuners before larger manufacturers returned to full production. It is recorded as a rare example of Riva coachwork applied to a compact Fiat-based sports car.
