01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari GG50 is a one-off concept designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro to mark fifty years of his design activity. Presented at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show, it is built on the mechanical base of the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti but adopts entirely new exterior and interior bodywork produced by Italdesign-Giugiaro. The chassis retains the Scaglietti’s 2,950 mm wheelbase, while overall length is reduced to approximately 4,810 mm through a redesigned fastback rear structure. Width is about 1,950 mm and height approximately 1,347 mm. The roof-hinged rear hatch and repositioned fuel tank increase luggage capacity to 270 litres, expandable to around 500 litres with the rear seats folded. The GG50 uses the Scaglietti’s 5,748 cc naturally aspirated 65-degree V12 engine mounted longitudinally at the front. Output is 540 PS at 7,250 rpm with four valves per cylinder and a compression ratio of 11.2:1. Power is transmitted to the rear axle through a six-speed sequential F1-style gearbox. Performance estimates place 0–100 km/h acceleration near 4.2 seconds and top speed around 315–320 km/h. The suspension, braking system, and general mechanical layout follow the configuration of the 612, including double wishbones on both axles and large-diameter disc brakes. The body panels are newly designed and introduce smoother surfaces and a more compact profile than the production 612. The front incorporates revised overhangs, modified intakes, and reshaped lighting units. The side view displays reduced visual mass and altered glass geometry. The fastback tail is the primary structural change, integrating a large rear opening for improved utility. Alloy wheels and aerodynamic detailing were developed specifically for the concept. The interior architecture derives from the 612 but includes redesigned instrumentation, revised dashboard surfaces, and bespoke trim. A Pioneer AVIC-X1R multimedia and navigation system was installed as part of the concept specification. Seating remains a 2+2 configuration. The GG50 remained a single example and did not enter production.
