01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari Dino 206 Berlinetta Prototype, chassis 00106, was a one-off, fully functional show car built by PininfarinaPininfarina and presented at the 1966 Turin Motor Show. It was the second prototype developed for Ferrari’s future Dino road-car programme and followed the static Dino Berlinetta Speciale shown in Paris in 1965. The design was created by Aldo Brovarone. Compared with the earlier prototype, chassis 00106 was developed as a usable running car with improved cabin space, more practical proportions and complete mechanical components. It was constructed on an experimental type 599 chassis and fitted with a longitudinally mounted type 135 B 2.0-litre V6 engine positioned behind the passenger compartment. The later production Dino 206 GT adopted a transverse engine layout. The body retained several elements introduced by the 1965 concept, including the low oval grille, covered headlamps and flying-buttress rear treatment. The long rear deck, sloping roofline and general proportions were also closely related to Pininfarina’s Ferrari 365 P Berlinetta Speciale “Tre Posti”, presented at the 1966 Paris Motor Show. Both cars used a longitudinal mid-engine arrangement and shared similar front and rear design themes. The prototype was finished in Fly Giallo with a blue cloth interior. Details such as the ventless side windows and separate front bumper elements were later adapted for the production Dino. The car received an official production date in December 1966 and was sold in early 1967 to Tullio Lombardo of Naples. It was exported to the United States in 1968 and passed through several collectors, including Charles Betz, Fred Peters and Carle Conway. The body was repainted metallic silver-grey in 1974. After later ownership in South Africa and Canada, the car was restored under the supervision of Ferrari specialist Michael Sheehan. Chassis 00106 was exhibited at the 1993 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and at the Petersen Automotive Museum in 2021. It remains an important development prototype linking Ferrari’s racing-derived Dino V6 programme with the production Dino 206 GT introduced in 1967.
