01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Ferrari 500 Mondial Spyder Scaglietti belongs to Ferrari’s early four-cylinder sports racing programme, which expanded during the 1950s alongside the marque’s established twelve-cylinder competition cars. The 500 Mondial used a two-litre inline-four engine developed from the work of Aurelio Lampredi and was conceived for international sports-car racing. The model name commemorated Alberto Ascari’s world championship successes.
The coachbuilding history of the 500 Mondial is not uniform. Pinin Farina constructed bodies for much of the early production, while Scaglietti became responsible for later open competition versions and helped establish the distinctive appearance of Ferrari’s subsequent sports racers. Ferrari’s own historical material also records the early association between Sergio Scaglietti’s work and a Dino Ferrari design proposal. The lightweight aluminium Spyder body was intended for competition rather than conventional road-car use.
This record concerns Scaglietti-bodied cars within the 500 Mondial family, not an individual chassis with a complete provenance. Specialist accounts disagree on precise subdivision and totals across the Pinin Farina and Scaglietti groups. Figures relating to Pinin Farina-bodied examples should therefore not be attributed automatically to the Scaglietti series. Chassis-specific dates, specifications and coachwork variations require individual evidence.

Exact total for this broad Scaglietti-family scope remains open.
