01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari 410 Superamerica, chassis number 0473SA, was completed in 1955 and bodied by Carrozzeria Ghia. Designed by Giovanni Savonuzzi, the vehicle reflects mid-century trends in concept car styling, particularly those influenced by American automotive design. Savonuzzi, known for his work on the Lincoln Gilda and the Chrysler Dart show cars, infused the 410 Superamerica Ghia with a similar futuristic aesthetic. The body featured prominent rear fins rising above the fender line, a wide rear bumper with chromed elements, and a wraparound windshield. These characteristics diverged from the typical Ferrari aesthetic of the period, which was more restrained and primarily shaped by Pinin Farina. The wraparound windshield, while consistent with the design language of contemporary show cars, introduced practical limitations. The shape of its lower corners, extending into the cabin, interfered with interior ergonomics. The fins and rear bumper also introduced a level of visual complexity uncommon among Ferrari’s production or prototype vehicles at the time. Mechanically, the car was consistent with other first-series 410 Superamerica models. It was equipped with a 5.0-liter Lampredi V12 engine and built on a chassis developed specifically for the series. Chassis 0473SA was delivered new to Robert C. Wilke of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Subsequent owners included Gary A. Wutke, John Mecom Jr., and the Blackhawk Collection. The car was exhibited at various events, including the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and The Quail. This example remains the only 410 Superamerica bodied by Ghia. It represents a singular case within the model’s production run, both for its visual execution and for the use of an external designer not typically associated with Ferrari’s road car program. The car’s design and ownership history provide context for a period of stylistic transition and cross-cultural influence in automotive design.
