01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari 275 GTB Pininfarina Speciale, chassis 06437, is one of the most unique and special cars to ever emerge from Ferrari’s storied history. Completed in 1964, it was the personal car of Battista Farina, the legendary founder of Carrozzeria Pininfarina. This particular 275 GTB was designed with several bespoke features that set it apart from its production counterparts, making it a standout example of Ferrari craftsmanship and engineering. Finished in a striking combination of Acqua Verde Metallizzato with China Red accents, chassis 06437 was unveiled at multiple prestigious auto shows. It first made its public appearance at the 1964 Paris Salon, and it was later showcased at the 1965 Frankfurt and Torino auto shows, before making appearances in Brussels in 1966. These appearances helped solidify its reputation as a masterpiece of automotive design. The car featured a variety of unique design elements, including the absence of a vent window, a distinctive feature that made it stand out from other 275 GTBs. The car’s design and its luxurious finish were a testament to the collaboration between Ferrari and Pininfarina, with the company crafting a vehicle that would define automotive beauty for years to come. In the years following its introduction, 06437 passed through several owners, including Vittorio Torchio and Mauro Indemini in Italy, before being acquired by Don Vincent Gaxiola in San Francisco in the 1970s. By the early 1990s, the car was in the possession of well-known Ferrari specialist Michael Sheehan, who began a restoration project on the car, which was completed in 1992. The meticulous work resulted in a stunning example of Ferrari’s engineering excellence. Following its restoration, 06437 became a regular participant at elite events, including the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where it won second in class (M-1) in 1992. The car also earned accolades at the Cavalino Classic, where it won the Excellence Cup in February 1993. In 2018, Ferrari 275 GTB Pininfarina Speciale chassis 06437 was sold at Gooding & Company’s Scottsdale Auction for an astounding $8,085,000, further cementing its status as one of Ferrari’s most coveted and valuable classic cars. It also received recognition at the Cavallino Classic in January 2019, where it won both the Gran Turismo Ferrari Cup and the Honorary Judges’ Cup, cementing its reputation as one of the finest Ferraris ever produced. Today, 06437 remains a shining example of Ferrari’s finest work, and its continued presence at prestigious events and auctions highlights its legacy as a true masterpiece of automotive design.
