01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari 250 GT Speciale, chassis 0725 GT, is a remarkable one-off Pinin Farina coupe built in 1957 for Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, combining the refined styling of the Ferrari Superamerica with the proven mechanical underpinnings of the 250 GT platform. Constructed on the 250 GT chassis type 508C and powered by a 3.0-liter Colombo V12 (engine no. 0725 GT, type 128C), this car was completed on October 23, 1957, and finished in a striking black exterior with a green leather interior (color code 3113). The elegant bodywork, designed under Pinin Farina job number 15779, features bespoke elements inspired by the more exclusive Superamerica series, including a distinctive roofline and custom detailing. Delivered just two days later to Prince Bernhard, the car was initially registered in Modena as MO 44844, before receiving Dutch royal license plate AA 13. A well-known car enthusiast and early Ferrari supporter, Prince Bernhard retained the car until 1961, when it was sold to Dries van der Lof, a Dutch racing driver and one of the first private Ferrari owners in the Netherlands. In 1969, 0725 GT was imported to the United States by Kirk F. White, who sold it to Carl Bross for $5,700. A year later, Bross traded it back to White in exchange for the legendary Ferrari 330 P3/4 (s/n 0854). Over the following decades, it changed hands multiple times, passing through collectors such as Allen Powell, Norman Silver, Greg Garrison, and eventually Lee Herrington. Under Herrington’s ownership, the car underwent a full restoration by Paul Russell and Company, returning it to concours condition. From 2001 onward, 0725 GT earned accolades at Pebble Beach, Cavallino Classic, Amelia Island, and other top-tier concours events. Its combination of royal provenance, unique coachwork, and award-winning restoration makes it one of the most distinctive and historically significant Ferrari 250 GTs ever built.
