01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Ferrari 212 Export Spider Motto chassis 0094E is a classic example of Ferrari’s dedication to both luxury and performance, combining cutting-edge technology with timeless elegance. It was first delivered in 1950 as a right-hand-drive model, bodied by Rocco Motto, finished in silver with red accents and featuring a distinctive three-headlight design and a one-piece windscreen. This unique configuration made the car stand out from other Ferrari models of the era, further adding to its mystique. In 1951, the car was purchased by Piero Scotti, a prominent figure in Italian motorsport. Under Scotti’s ownership, the car had an extensive and successful racing career. It participated in several prestigious events, including the Mille Miglia, where Scotti, along with co-driver Amos Ruspaggiari, secured a strong 3rd overall finish and 2nd in their class. The car continued to excel on the racing circuits, taking 3rd overall at the Coppa della Toscana and finishing in the top positions at various hill climbs such as the Catania-Etna and Vittorio Veneto-Cansiglio. Scotti’s performance in the 212 Export Spider contributed to his title as the Italian sports car champion of 1951. In 1952, the car made its way to South America, where it became part of Roberto Wenceslao Bonomi’s collection in Buenos Aires. Under Bonomi’s ownership, the Ferrari continued its racing success, with notable victories at the Autodromo de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires and the Premio Eva Peron. By the mid-1950s, the car was in the hands of various Argentine owners, including Jorge and Oscar Camano, who raced it extensively in events like the 1000km Buenos Aires and the Circuito del Bosque in La Plata. As the years passed, the Ferrari 212 Export Spider underwent several changes. It was repainted white with a blue stripe in the mid-1950s and later underwent further modifications. In the 1960s, the car’s nose was altered, possibly due to an accident. By 1970, it was owned by Lucio M. Bollaert in Buenos Aires. The car would go on to change hands several more times in the following decades. In the 1980s, it was repainted dark blue under the ownership of Hector Mendizabal and later grey metallic when Antoine Midy of Paris acquired it. Midy would be a prominent figure in the car’s history, participating in events such as the Mille Miglia in 1987 and the Tour de France Auto in 1992, where he co-drove with Robert Caron. The Ferrari also participated in prestigious concours events, including the GP Historique Monaco in 1997 and the Concours Automobiles Classiques in 1999, where it was displayed at the Galleria Ferrari in Maranello. After Midy’s passing in 2007, the car was auctioned at Bonhams in 2008, though it did not sell, despite the high bid of SFr. 2.15 million. It continued to make appearances at various events, including the Rendez-Vous Ferrari at Monthléry in 2010 and the Sport & Collection events in Le Vigeant and Circuit du Val de Vienne throughout the 2010s. Today, the Ferrari 212 Export Spider Motto chassis 0094E is celebrated as one of Ferrari’s most iconic and historically significant models, with a racing pedigree that stretches across the globe and an enduring presence in the world of classic car enthusiasts.
