01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ermini Fiat Siluro 1100 cc of 1950 was a limited-production sports-racing automobile developed by Ermini in the immediate postwar period and clothed by Carrozzeria Motto. The model formed part of Ermini’s effort to consolidate its position among Italian specialist constructors by combining Fiat-based mechanicals with advanced chassis engineering and aerodynamically focused coachwork, in line with late-1940s competition trends emphasizing efficiency and lightweight construction. The structural basis of the Siluro 1100 cc was a tubular spaceframe chassis supplied by Gilco, identified in period documentation by the designation F035651F. Gilco, under the direction of Gilberto Colombo, was at the forefront of Italian tubular chassis design, applying Grand Prix–derived principles to small-displacement sports cars. The chassis employed small-diameter steel tubes arranged in a triangulated configuration to achieve high torsional rigidity while minimizing weight, providing a stable and responsive platform for competition use. This construction marked a significant departure from modified production frames still used by many contemporaries in the same class. The mechanical layout followed conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive practice. Power was provided by a Fiat-derived inline four-cylinder engine of 1,100 cc displacement, selected for its durability and suitability for tuning within national racing regulations. While outright power figures are not consistently recorded, the engine offered balanced performance when combined with the car’s low mass and reduced aerodynamic drag. Suspension was engineered to complement the rigidity of the Gilco frame, with geometry aimed at maintaining handling precision and adequate ride compliance on the uneven road circuits typical of Italian events in the period. The bodywork executed by Carrozzeria Motto adopted a “siluro” profile characterized by a narrow frontal section, smooth uninterrupted surfaces, and a tapered tail. Constructed in light alloy using traditional hand-forming techniques, the body closely followed the contours of the Gilco chassis to optimize airflow and reduce frontal area. The design reflected the functional aesthetic emerging in postwar Italian sports-racing cars, where aerodynamic considerations increasingly dictated form.
