01 / THE STORY
History & context
The DKW Sonderklasse Pininfarina was a one-off prototype developed in 1956 as part of a design study initiated by Auto Union GmbH. The project was executed in collaboration with Carrozzeria Pininfarina of Turin, with the objective of evaluating the feasibility of applying Italian stylistic principles to the DKW Sonderklasse mechanical platform. The resulting prototype was constructed on the chassis and drivetrain of the DKW F93 or F94 series, referred to in various export markets as the DKW 3=6. The mechanical layout followed the standard DKW configuration of the period. A transversely mounted, two-stroke, three-cylinder engine of 896 cubic centimetres was fitted at the front, delivering approximately 38 to 40 horsepower. Power was transmitted to the front wheels through a three- or four-speed manual gearbox, depending on configuration. Suspension was independent at the front with coil springs, while the rear employed a live axle with trailing arms and coil springs. The braking system consisted of hydraulically operated drums on all four wheels. The body, fabricated in aluminium, was designed and constructed by Pininfarina. It presented a more angular and restrained silhouette in contrast to the rounded, utilitarian forms of the production Sonderklasse. The frontal aspect featured a wide horizontal grille and rectangular headlamp surrounds, while the rear included a panoramic window integrated into a tapering C-pillar design. The greenhouse was comparatively generous, and the beltline remained low across the side profile. The body was mounted to the standard DKW monocoque structure with minimal modification to the mechanical underpinnings. The prototype remained a single example. Auto Union evaluated the design for limited-series production but ultimately rejected the proposal due to cost implications associated with aluminium body construction and the retooling required for series manufacture. No further examples were constructed. The vehicle was retained within internal company custody for a period before being dispersed; its present location is not documented in publicly accessible registries. The DKW Sonderklasse Pininfarina reflects mid-1950s practices wherein manufacturers engaged external carrozzerie to assess the market potential of alternative body styles. The prototype remains a singular artifact illustrating the intersection of German engineering constraints with contemporary Italian automotive form.
