01 / THE STORY

History & context

The De Tomaso 1600 Spider made its debut at the 1971 Turin Motor Show as a prototype crafted by Carrozzeria Ghia and powered by a Ford engine. This striking sports car immediately sparked controversy in the automotive world due to its striking resemblance to the Fiat X1/9, a car designed by Bertone. Critics were quick to accuse De Tomaso of plagiarism, but the truth behind the 1600 Spider’s creation is more complex than mere imitation. The 1600 Spider was not intended for mass production. Alejandro De Tomaso, the Argentine-Italian automotive entrepreneur, tasked the talented designer Tom Tjaarda with creating a prototype that would showcase De Tomaso’s capability to design and produce cars at speed. The car was inspired by the emerging Fiat X1/9, which was in development by Bertone, but it was not simply a copy. Rather, the De Tomaso 1600 Spider was a quick response to the designs circulating in the industry at the time, particularly those between Fiat and Bertone. De Tomaso’s decision to present this provocative prototype at the Turin Motor Show in 1971 had an unexpected effect. Rather than being seen as a direct competitor to Fiat’s X1/9, the 1600 Spider spurred Bertone into action. The X1/9, which had been languishing in uncertainty and development delays, suddenly became a priority for Bertone. The competition from De Tomaso’s bold prototype pushed Bertone to accelerate the development of the X1/9 project. Without the De Tomaso 1600 Spider, the fate of the X1/9 might have been vastly different—it could have remained an unfinished design sitting forgotten in a Bertone warehouse. Instead, the X1/9 emerged as a beloved two-seater sports car, winning the admiration of automotive enthusiasts around the world. While the De Tomaso 1600 Spider never reached mass production, it inadvertently played a crucial role in the development and success of Fiat’s iconic X1/9, making its legacy far more significant than initially anticipated.
