01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Cisitalia 808X Coupé Vignale represents the second physical realization of the 808X program and constitutes a parallel development to the original Ghia-bodied prototype rather than a stylistic departure. Built shortly after chassis 00001, this coupé retained the same design by Aldo Brovarone, translated into production by Carrozzeria Vignale instead of Ghia. The change of coachbuilder reflected Cisitalia’s effort to explore alternative construction paths as the collaboration with Ford evolved and cost considerations became more prominent. Unlike the Ghia prototype, which was constructed on Cisitalia’s bespoke X-frame, the Vignale coupé was built on a standard Ford chassis supplied directly from the United States. This decision significantly altered the engineering philosophy of the car while preserving its external form. The objective was to demonstrate that Brovarone’s design could be adapted to mass-produced American underpinnings, thereby reducing development and manufacturing complexity in the event of series production. Visually, the Vignale coupé follows Brovarone’s original composition with high fidelity. The proportions, roofline, window geometry, and frontal architecture remain consistent with the Ghia prototype. Differences are limited to execution details rather than design intent. Vignale’s bodywork exhibits subtle variations in panel shaping, trim application, and surface tension, reflecting the firm’s construction methods and aesthetic preferences. These distinctions are particularly evident in the treatment of the grille surround, rear fenders, and bumper integration, but they do not constitute a redesign. Mechanically, the car employed Ford-sourced running gear, typically associated with early-1950s Ford passenger vehicles. Contemporary documentation indicates that V8 power was favored for the American evaluation phase, aligning the car’s performance characteristics with U.S. market expectations. The suspension and braking systems followed Ford specifications, without the advanced De Dion rear axle used on the Ghia prototype. The 808X Coupé Vignale was completed as part of a small batch of Ford-chassis-based 808X cars intended for presentation and demonstration purposes. Together with the Vignale cabriolet—an entirely separate design by Giovanni Michelotti—it formed Cisitalia’s second attempt to sustain Ford’s interest after the evaluation of the original prototype. Within the context of the 808X program, the Vignale coupé serves as a critical comparative artifact. It documents the direct transfer of Brovarone’s design from a bespoke Italian chassis to a standardized American platform, illustrating Cisitalia’s pragmatic shift from experimental engineering toward industrial feasibility.
