01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Chevrolet Corvair Pininfarina first proposal was developed in 1960 as an early design study applying Italian coachbuilding practice to the newly introduced Chevrolet Corvair. The project was initiated shortly after the Corvair’s debut and used the standard rear-engine, air-cooled mechanical layout supplied by General Motors. Design work was carried out at Pininfarina’s Turin studios, with Tom Tjaarda responsible for the styling of the first iteration. This initial proposal retained the Corvair’s basic chassis dimensions and rear-engine configuration while replacing the production body with a bespoke steel coupe. The design adopted a low, tapered nose, a reduced front overhang, and smooth surface transitions, differing markedly from contemporary American compact cars. Fender volumes were integrated into the body sides rather than expressed as separate elements. The roofline was lowered and extended rearward in a continuous curve, visually lengthening the profile despite the Corvair’s compact proportions. The greenhouse retained a conventional windshield but introduced thinner pillars and a more streamlined roof contour. Side glazing was simplified, and ornamentation was minimized. The rear treatment followed fastback principles, with engine ventilation integrated discreetly into the bodywork. The design emphasized horizontal balance and surface continuity, aligning more closely with European grand touring practice than with American mass-production styling of the period. Mechanically, the prototype remained unchanged from standard Corvair specification, including the rear-mounted flat-six engine, independent suspension, and transaxle. Interior layout followed Corvair architecture, with modifications limited to trim and seating details appropriate to the custom body. The first proposal was publicly displayed at the 1960 Paris Motor Show and subsequently at the 1960 Turin Motor Show, where it was noted for its restrained proportions and departure from prevailing American design language. The prototype served as the starting point for further development within Pininfarina, leading to additional redesigns in subsequent years. These later iterations revised window geometry, roof structure, and overall massing while continuing to explore the Corvair platform as a basis for European-influenced coachbuilt alternatives.
