01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Bugatti EB110 Bertone, designed in 1991 by Marc Deschamps, represents Bertone’s innovative proposal for the iconic Bugatti EB110. This design was part of a competitive selection process involving several notable contributors, including Italdesign with the ID90, Paolo Martin with the PM1, and Marcello Gandini with the DMD80 prototype. The DMD80 prototype, although initially favored, was later modified by Architect Benedini, leading to the final design of the EB110. Marc Deschamps’ vision for the Bugatti EB110 was both striking and forward-thinking. His proposal for Bertone showcased a sleek and aggressive aesthetic, reflecting the high-performance ethos of the EB110. Despite its bold design, Bertone’s concept did not advance to production for the Bugatti brand. Interestingly, the design language developed for the Bugatti EB110 Bertone did not go to waste. This proposal was later repurposed for the Bertone Lotus Emotion concept car, which also sought to blend performance with dramatic design. The Lotus Emotion, however, like its Bugatti counterpart, did not see production, but it further demonstrated Bertone’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive aesthetics. In summary, the Bugatti EB110 Bertone by Marc Deschamps stands as a noteworthy chapter in automotive design history. While it did not become a production model for Bugatti, it influenced future designs and remains a testament to Bertone’s creative prowess. The design’s legacy continued through its adaptation into the Lotus Emotion concept, underscoring the enduring impact of Bertone’s visionary approach to high-performance sports cars.
