01 / THE STORY

History & context

The BMW 2000 TI Frua is a fascinating and unique example of automotive design, blending German engineering with Italian craftsmanship. Based on a BMW 2000 TI produced in March 1966, the car underwent a stunning transformation by renowned coachbuilder Pietro Frua. The result was the Monteverdi 2000 GTI coupé, which was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1968. Originally, the Frua-designed coupe was intended to showcase an upscale, sportier interpretation of the BMW 2000 TI, with design elements that highlighted both performance and elegance. When the car reappeared at the Paris Motor Show later that year, it bore BMW badges instead of the Monteverdi logos, signaling a shift in direction for the model. Along with the badge change, the car was also modified with spoked wheels, among other subtle alterations, to make it even more appealing to the luxury market. The car caught the attention of Peter Monteverdi, a well-known Swiss car manufacturer, who saw potential in the design and purchased the vehicle. After acquiring the coupe, Monteverdi converted it back to its original Monteverdi 2000 GTI specification, restoring the vehicle’s distinctive identity. This transformation marked the car’s evolution, blending Frua’s styling with Monteverdi’s vision for performance and luxury. Over the years, the BMW 2000 TI Frua changed ownership a couple of times. In 1998, the car was sold to a new owner, and then, in 2019, it changed hands once more. Despite these ownership changes, the car has remained a rare and coveted piece of automotive history, admired for its distinctive design and fascinating history. Today, the BMW Frua continues to stand as a reminder of the collaboration between BMW and Pietro Frua, demonstrating how two companies with different philosophies came together to create something truly special, both in terms of engineering and design.
