01 / THE STORY

History & context

The BAIC D50 is a compact four-door sedan produced by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. (BAIC), one of China’s leading state-owned automotive manufacturers. Initially introduced under the Senova sub-brand as the Senova D50 in 2014, the model was later rebranded as the Beijing U5 in 2020 as part of a corporate brand consolidation initiative. The D50 series has played a central role in BAIC’s strategy to expand its presence in both domestic and international compact car markets. The first-generation Senova D50 debuted at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show. Its exterior styling was developed in cooperation with the Italian design house Gruppo Bertone, under the direction of designer Mike Robinson. This partnership reflected BAIC’s aim to incorporate European design influences into its product offerings, enhancing their appeal to a broader global audience. The vehicle was positioned within the compact segment, with dimensions approximately 4,582 mm in length, 1,794 mm in width, and 1,486 mm in height. The original powertrain options included a 1.5-liter inline-four petrol engine producing around 113 horsepower, mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). In 2017, BAIC introduced a second-generation model featuring revised styling, improved interior space, and updated powertrain options. The revised model offered both a naturally aspirated and a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, the latter delivering approximately 150 horsepower. In 2020, the model was rebranded as the Beijing U5 in alignment with BAIC’s unified “Beijing” brand architecture. This rebranding retained the technical foundation of the D50 while introducing minor cosmetic updates to reflect the new identity. Electric variants based on the D50 architecture have also been developed and marketed under BAIC’s BJEV sub-brand. These include the EU5, a battery-electric sedan designed to meet growing demand for zero-emissions vehicles in China and selected export markets. The BAIC D50 series, through its multiple iterations and rebranding efforts, illustrates the strategic evolution of a Chinese compact car platform. It demonstrates BAIC’s commitment to design innovation, market adaptability, and increased international competitiveness.
