01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo Bella was a 1999 prototype developed by Bertone and designed by Luciano D’Ambrosio as a 2+2 coupé derived from the Alfa Romeo 166 platform. It was presented at the Geneva Motor Show to assess public response to a potential coupé version of the 166. The concept maintained the mechanical base of the production sedan, including a front-mounted 3.0-litre Busso V6 engine producing approximately 225 hp, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Power was transmitted to the front wheels. The chassis retained the 166’s independent suspension layout, with double wishbones at the front and MacPherson struts at the rear. Braking was by ventilated discs on all four wheels, assisted by ABS. The vehicle measured 4,460 mm in length, 1,919 mm in width, and 1,320 mm in height. The structure incorporated a steel monocoque reinforced for torsional rigidity, allowing coupe proportions without compromising stability. The Bella’s exterior design featured smooth, continuous body surfaces and an integrated glass canopy forming a seamless junction between windscreen and side windows. LED technology was used in the headlamps and rear light clusters. The front fascia displayed Alfa Romeo’s traditional shield grille recessed into a sculpted bonnet, while the rear profile used a fastback layout tapering into a short tail. The cabin was arranged as a 2+2 with two front sport seats and a folding rear bench, allowing increased cargo volume. Upholstery combined red leather and natural textiles, with aluminium and walnut inserts. The dashboard integrated a digital display and concealed ventilation ducts behind perforated panels. Weight distribution was balanced by positioning mechanical components low within the chassis. The prototype’s dimensions and structure ensured stable dynamics comparable to the 166 sedan. Although fully functional and production-ready, only one Bella was built, and the project did not advance beyond concept stage. The Bella, like other Bertone projects, sought to attract attention with limited investments and significant emotional impact.
