01 / THE STORY

History & context

Alfa Romeo 1900C Cabriolet Pininfarina was a 1951 cabriolet built by Pininfarina on the Alfa Romeo 1900 platform. It formed part of the post-war Alfa Romeo 1900 series, which combined sporting character with luxury. Pininfarina employed traditional coachbuilding methods for the open body, using a lightweight steel structure complemented by aluminium body panels. This construction joined two materials in a body developed for the cabriolet. The 1900 series marked an evolution in Alfa Romeo design and engineering after the war.

The car’s proportions were carefully crafted to balance elegance and functionality in the stylistic context of the early 1950s. Its bodywork presented the 1900 mechanical basis in open form while retaining the character of the series. Its proportions gave equal weight to appearance and practical use. Detailed work in the design and construction appealed to clients seeking a coachbuilt Alfa Romeo. The steel structure and aluminium panels were integral elements of the body, not merely exterior decoration. The cabriolet was produced during a period when specialist bodywork remained part of Italian sporting and luxury-car production.

Mechanically, the cabriolet used an inline-six engine. Its chassis was based on the Alfa Romeo 1900 platform and featured a sophisticated suspension system that enhanced handling and ride quality. The engine, chassis and suspension gave the car a smooth and responsive driving character. The body’s steel structure and aluminium panels formed part of the car’s construction and contributed to its overall performance and appearance.

The car was shown at automotive exhibitions within the Alfa Romeo range. Surviving examples are recorded in private collections and institutional archives, where they provide reference for research into post-war coachbuilding and the work of Pininfarina. Production was limited to 88 cars. Chassis 01094 was one example. The chassis number belongs to an individual car, while the recorded total applies to the model series.

The Pininfarina body combined traditional construction with aluminium panels over a lightweight steel structure. Its open form placed the cabriolet alongside other coachbuilt Alfa Romeos of the early 1950s. The recorded production total of 88 examples places chassis 01094 within a small series of Alfa Romeo 1900C Cabriolet Pininfarina cars produced by Pininfarina.
