01 / THE STORY

History & context

Alfa Romeo 1900 Pantera was coachbuilt by Colli in 1956. It formed part of the Alfa Romeo 1900 programme at a time when the model combined advanced engineering with Italian coachbuilt bodywork. Colli shaped the car through a careful approach to proportions and construction methods, placing it within the mid-1950s Italian specialist-body tradition. The body combined functional elegance with aerodynamic considerations rather than serving as a separate decorative shell.

The car used a robust chassis as the basis for its distinctive design. Its power-unit configuration contributed to performance and handling, while the suspension was arranged to balance comfort with sporting characteristics. These mechanical elements supported a refined driving character and gave the coachbuilt body a substantial technical foundation. The construction joined the Alfa Romeo 1900 mechanical basis to Colli’s work on proportion, form and exterior treatment.

Production was limited, and chassis numbering documented individual cars. Surviving examples remain recorded, preserving evidence of Colli’s craftsmanship and the period’s approach to Alfa Romeo-based coachbuilding. The Alfa Romeo 1900 Pantera also appeared at automotive shows, where it represented the car within the contemporary Italian automotive landscape. Its show appearances placed the car before the public during the period in which specialist coachbuilders continued to develop individual forms on established mechanical platforms.

Examples survive in private collections and institutional archives. Those cars provide reference material for the study of postwar Italian coachbuilding, including Colli’s treatment of the Alfa Romeo 1900 chassis, the body’s proportions and its construction. Recorded chassis numbers also distinguish the limited production cars as individual documented examples rather than an undifferentiated series.

Colli’s work on the Alfa Romeo 1900 Pantera centred on the relationship between the body and the underlying mechanical structure. The coachbuilder’s approach brought together construction, proportion, aerodynamic form and the suspension and power-unit arrangement already present beneath the coachbuilt exterior. The surviving cars retain this combination of Alfa Romeo engineering and specialist Italian bodywork.
