01 / THE STORY
History & context
Alfa Romeo 1900 Berlina Lunga Colli was coachbuilt by Colli in 1955, using the Alfa Romeo 1900 as its mechanical basis. The extended Berlina combined a formal body with the longer Lunga configuration in a coachbuilt interpretation of Alfa Romeo’s early-1950s model. The 1900 was introduced as Alfa Romeo moved into mass production while retaining an emphasis on quality coachbuilding. Colli applied that basis to a Berlina intended to combine practical accommodation, comfort and individual style.
Colli built the extended body around a steel monocoque structure. This construction formed the basis for the car’s proportions, balancing weight and rigidity within the longer Berlina layout. Clean body lines and functional exterior elements followed contemporary styling practice. The bodywork brought the Lunga configuration to the formal Berlina form, joining the practical requirements of the layout to the individual character of Colli’s coachbuilding work. Steel construction, clean surfaces and restrained exterior detailing defined the car’s appearance.
The car retained the robust chassis engineering of the Alfa Romeo 1900. Its engine configuration suited regular road use, with reliability and performance forming part of the model’s character. The suspension was arranged to provide a comfortable ride while preserving the dynamic handling expected of mid-1950s Alfa Romeo engineering. These mechanical elements supported the Berlina’s role as a practical, comfortable car rather than a purely sporting derivative. The longer body therefore remained tied to the 1900’s established mechanical platform.
The Alfa Romeo 1900 Berlina Lunga Colli placed steel monocoque construction within an extended coachbuilt Berlina body. Its clean body surfaces and functional details reflected the construction and styling approaches used in postwar Italian coachbuilding. The formal proportions of the Berlina body accommodated the Lunga configuration without departing from the 1900 mechanical basis. The combination of a standard Alfa Romeo platform and individually executed bodywork defined Colli’s treatment of the model.
Production remained limited, reflecting the bespoke character of the coachbuilding process. Surviving examples are recorded in private collections and institutional archives. They retain the relationship between the Alfa Romeo 1900 mechanical platform and Colli’s extended Berlina bodywork. The surviving cars also preserve the steel monocoque construction, clean exterior treatment and functional details of the Lunga configuration. Limited production remained consistent with the individual nature of the bodywork.
