01 / THE STORY

History & context

The AC 428 Convertible, designed by the esteemed Pietro Frua, stands as a direct descendant of the legendary AC/Shelby Cobra, transforming the fiery Anglo-American sports car into a luxurious, high-performance grand tourer. This remarkable vehicle, known as the AC 428 Frua, represents a truly international collaboration, blending the finest elements of British engineering and Italian design. Assembled in Thames-Ditton, the AC 428 Convertible Frua utilized a coil-sprung AC Cobra chassis and was powered by Ford’s formidable 428 FE V8 engine. Its sophisticated Italian coachwork was masterfully crafted by Pietro Frua, lending the car an elegant yet aggressive stance. Production of this rare gem concluded in 1973, with only 51 Coupes and 29 Convertibles ever built, making surviving examples highly sought-after by collectors. One such example, chassis CF 14, is an original right-hand-drive car, equipped with the optional automatic gearbox, a feature chosen by most owners. This particular vehicle boasts a fascinating provenance, having been originally owned by Rob Walker, the heir to the Johnnie Walker Whisky fortune and the principal of Rob Walker Racing. The car later found its way into the hands of Adrian McAlpine, a member of the prominent British McAlpine industrial family, before eventually crossing the Atlantic to the USA. Chassis CF 14 benefits from a meticulously executed cosmetic restoration, presenting in a striking red exterior over black trim and fitted with wire wheels. This beautifully finished example exemplifies the essence of the AC 428 Frua – a grown-up Cobra designed for the discerning collector who appreciates both performance and luxury. The AC 428 Convertible Frua remains a testament to the innovative spirit and international collaboration that defined the golden age of automotive design, making it a prized addition to any serious collector’s garage.
