01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Abarth 750 Monoposto Da Record was a one-off prototype developed in 1957 by Abarth in collaboration with Carrozzeria Pininfarina. Designed to break speed and endurance records in the sub-750 cc class, it featured an aerodynamic, single-seat aluminum body constructed using Pininfarina’s Superleggera technique. The vehicle was powered by a 747 cc inline-four engine derived from the Fiat 600, tuned by Abarth to produce approximately 47 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. Combined with a lightweight chassis weighing around 385 kilograms, the car achieved speeds exceeding 190 km/h. The streamlined design, characterized by a low frontal area and enclosed wheels, minimized aerodynamic drag, enhancing high-speed stability. In June 1956, the Abarth 750 Monoposto Da Record set multiple international records at the Monza circuit. Notably, it covered 3,743.642 kilometers in 24 hours at an average speed of 155.985 km/h. Subsequent attempts led to additional records, including distances of 500 km, 500 miles, 1,000 km, and durations of 48 and 72 hours, demonstrating the car’s endurance and efficiency. The success of the 750 Monoposto Da Record contributed to Abarth’s reputation for engineering excellence and performance. It also strengthened the partnership between Abarth and Fiat, leading to further collaborations on high-performance vehicles. The Abarth 750 Monoposto Da Record stands as a testament to the innovative spirit of mid-20th-century Italian automotive engineering and design. Its achievements in setting endurance and speed records underscored the capabilities of small-displacement engines when paired with advanced aerodynamics and lightweight construction. The vehicle remains a significant piece of automotive history, reflecting the era’s pursuit of performance and efficiency.
