Italdesign May Be Sold to Indian-Owned UST

October 8, 2025

After Iveco, another symbol of Italian automotive history may be heading into Indian hands. According to Corriere della Sera, Italdesign, the legendary design and engineering firm founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro, is the target of a potential acquisition by UST, a California-based multinational with Indian capital.

The news emerged despite a reported internal communication restricting employees — including union representatives — from discussing the matter. On Thursday, UST executives are expected to visit Italdesign’s headquarters in Moncalieri, near Turin, marking an unusual step for a potential buyer in the early stages of negotiations.

A Tech Giant Steps Into Automotive

UST, led by chairman Paras Chandaria and CEO Krishna Sudheendra, operates primarily in software, artificial intelligence, and digital technology. The company, valued at around $2 billion in annual revenue with over 30,000 employees, is active in healthcare and financial technology as well.

The possible acquisition raises questions about the future of Italdesign’s identity as an automotive design and engineering hub. Industry observers wonder whether the move is part of a strategic integration between digital innovation and vehicle development — or a purely speculative investment.

Audi’s Restructuring and the Sale Context

Italdesign has belonged to Audi, part of the Volkswagen Group, since 2010. Around 70% of its projects come from Audi and related brands. However, the German group is currently implementing a broad cost-reduction plan across its divisions, which may involve cutting external design branches and internalizing development resources.

If approved by Audi’s board and subsequently by Volkswagen’s supervisory board, the sale could be finalized by the end of the year — though union sources consider that timeline unlikely. The decision is viewed within a broader transformation of Europe’s automotive landscape, where Italian heritage companies are increasingly integrated into global industrial and technological conglomerates.

A Shifting Landscape

Following Pininfarina’s sale to India’s Mahindra Group and Iveco’s upcoming transfer to Tata, Italdesign’s potential change in ownership underscores a new phase for Turin’s historic automotive ecosystem. While globalization brings capital and innovation, it also fuels uncertainty among workers — who, for now, are waiting to see what remains of Italy’s once self-contained automotive industry.
