01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 2800 Cabriolet by Carrozzeria Viotti was a limited-production open-bodied variant of Fiat’s flagship executive model, constructed circa 1940. Based on the Fiat 2800 chassis, the cabriolet configuration was executed by Carrozzeria Viotti of Turin, a coachbuilder known for its custom bodies on Italian production platforms during the interwar and immediate postwar periods. The 2800 series, introduced in 1938, marked the uppermost tier in Fiat’s pre-war catalogue and was produced until 1944 in a total of 624 units. The mechanical configuration featured a front-mounted, inline six-cylinder petrol engine with overhead valves and a displacement of 2,852 cc. The engine produced approximately 85 horsepower at 3,800 rpm. Power was transmitted to the rear axle via a four-speed manual gearbox. The chassis employed a conventional ladder frame with rigid axles and semi-elliptic leaf springs at both front and rear. Braking was hydraulic, utilizing drum assemblies on all four wheels. The vehicle’s top speed was approximately 130 km/h, depending on body configuration and weight. Viotti’s cabriolet body was fabricated in steel, mounted over a wooden substructure. The design retained Fiat’s characteristic front-end treatment, including the prominent pointed grille (“musone”), but reinterpreted the bodywork as a two-door, four-seat open tourer with a folding canvas top and a clean, flowing rear deck. The styling was restrained, in keeping with period formal design, and functional in its proportions. Interior appointments were modest, with instruments mounted in a centrally positioned dashboard and trim finished in leather or cloth, depending on client specification. Production figures for the Viotti-bodied cabriolet variant are not precisely documented. It is estimated that no more than 10 to 12 examples were constructed by Viotti on the 2800 chassis. Survivorship is minimal; approximately six examples are believed to remain extant, several of which have appeared in period photographs in official or diplomatic use. No comprehensive chassis registry has been published, and detailed ownership histories remain fragmented. The Fiat 2800 Cabriolet Viotti stands as a rare example of bespoke Italian coachbuilding on a state-level platform. It reflects the ceremonial and representational use of automobiles in pre-war Italy and the enduring craftsmanship of Viotti during a period of industrial constraint and political transition.
