01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1500 Glenn was a one-off prototype bodied by Carrozzeria Vignale and presented at international motor exhibitions in 1962. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, the Glenn was based on the Fiat 1500 chassis and served as a styling study rather than a prelude to series production. It was exhibited at the Geneva and Turin Motor Shows as a showcase for modular coachwork design applied to mass-production underpinnings. The mechanical foundation was drawn directly from the Fiat 1500 introduced in 1961. The front-mounted engine was an inline four-cylinder unit with a displacement of 1,481 cubic centimetres. The engine employed a single carburettor and overhead valves, producing approximately 75 horsepower. Power was transmitted to the rear axle through a four-speed manual gearbox. The standard suspension system, comprising independent front suspension with coil springs and a live rear axle with leaf springs, was retained. Drum brakes were fitted at all four wheels. The Glenn’s coachwork was a low-profile two-door spider, characterized by a clean, restrained surface treatment. The body incorporated a full-width grille, paired circular headlamps, and an unadorned rear section with simple horizontal tail lamps. A distinguishing feature of the Glenn was its detachable rear body section, including the canvas roof and rear passenger compartment, allowing for transformation between enclosed and open configurations. The windshield was frameless, with minimal side supports. Only one specimen of the Fiat 1500 Glenn was constructed. It was not homologated for production, and no orders were taken. Fiat did not record the vehicle as part of its official product line, and Vignale built it solely for presentation purposes. Chassis and engine numbers for the Glenn are not publicly recorded. There is no verifiable ownership trail, and the car’s current whereabouts are unknown.
