01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 S “Turinga” Berlinetta, built by Carrozzeria Touring in 1944, is an exceptionally rare and historically significant example of wartime Italian coachbuilding. Only nine units of this model were constructed during World War II, at a time when the Italian automotive industry operated under extreme constraints, including material shortages, disrupted supply lines, and the diversion of industrial resources toward the war effort. Yet despite these challenges, Touring continued to produce refined, technically sophisticated vehicles, exemplified by the Turinga Berlinetta. The car was based on the 6C 2500 Sport chassis, the final evolution of Alfa Romeo’s renowned pre-war inline six-cylinder platform. It featured a 2,443 cc DOHC engine delivering approximately 95 horsepower, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. What distinguished the Turinga, however, was its elegant Berlinetta bodywork, constructed using Touring’s patented Superleggera method—an aluminum outer skin supported by a tubular steel framework, minimizing weight while preserving strength and rigidity. The Turinga designation itself reflects the political environment of wartime Italy. Under pressure from Fascist cultural policies that discouraged foreign words, Carrozzeria Touring temporarily adopted the Italianized name “Turinga,” in line with the regime’s push for linguistic nationalism. This period also saw similar name changes across Italian society—such as “Cognac” becoming acquarzente and “Inter” football club renamed Ambrosiana. As a result, a limited number of Touring’s wartime vehicles were delivered bearing the Turinga badge, of which the 6C 2500 Berlinetta is the most distinguished. The body design of the 6C 2500 S Turinga is notable not only for its streamlined proportions and flowing fender lines, but also for its role in Touring’s postwar design continuity. The same Berlinetta body style—scaled and subtly modified—was later reused by Touring on a Lancia Aprilia chassis (no. 439-11512), built in 1946. This Aprilia Berlinetta, today preserved in the Lopresto Collection, featured an identical silhouette and design language, including the fastback roofline, integrated wings, and minimalist detailing. The reuse of this body illustrates Touring’s strategic approach to design during and after the war: applying a successful, aerodynamic form to multiple platforms as conditions and chassis availability evolved. Of the nine original Alfa Romeo Turinga Berlinettas produced, only three examples are known to survive. Each stands as a unique convergence of Italian craftsmanship, political adaptation, and coachbuilt innovation during one of the most turbulent periods in modern history. Together with its Aprilia sibling, the Turinga Berlinetta forms part of a rare lineage of Touring-bodied coupes that demonstrate how a single design could transcend both mechanical architecture and historical moment, leaving a lasting legacy in the annals of European automotive design.
