01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Aurelia B50 Coupé Farina is a remarkable example of Italian automotive craftsmanship, showcasing the  craftmanship of Stabilimenti Farina. Built in limited numbers—only five specimens were produced—this coupé represents a unique blend of elegant design and advanced engineering, epitomizing the luxury sports cars of its time. As the B10 sedan made its debut in the market, Lancia simultaneously provided “naked” chassis to various coachbuilders. Among these were the B50 and B51 models. While both chassis shared a similar design, the B51 was tailored for heavier bodyworks, featuring larger tires and a shorter “bridge” ratio. The B50, on the other hand, maintained a more traditional setup, housing the same 1.8-liter engine found in the B10 sedan. Stabilimenti Farina’s expertise came into play in creating the B50 coupé, resulting in a car that is not only visually stunning but also technically sound. Alongside the B50 coupé, Pininfarina produced Cabriolets, and Viotti crafted Giardinettas (station wagons) based on the B50 and B51 chassis. The production numbers reflect the exclusivity of these models; while just under three hundred cabriolets were produced by Pininfarina—265 standard models and twenty with special equipment—Viotti’s Giardinettas numbered around fifty. The B50 chassis served as a foundation for numerous custom-built cars by various prominent Italian coachbuilders, including Allemano, Balbo, Boneschi, Canta, Ghia, and Vignale. This further underscores the versatility and desirability of the B50 chassis in the luxury automotive market. The limited production of the Stabilimenti Farina coupés and the unique designs created by each coachbuilder contribute to the allure and collectibility of the Lancia Aurelia series. Today, the Lancia Aurelia B50 Coupé Farina remains a sought-after classic, celebrated for its exquisite design, engineering sophistication, and the storied legacy of Italian craftsmanship. Its rarity and beauty continue to captivate car enthusiasts and collectors alike, solidifying its place in automotive history.
