01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1100 Monza, crafted by Carrozzeria Riva, was a remarkable fuoriserie model built on the chassis of the Fiat 1100E. Riva, founded in 1949 in Carzaniga Merate, initially specialized in Fiat 500C-based “Giardinettas.” However, its reputation was solidified with the introduction of the Monza, which debuted at the 1949 Venice Elegance Concours, garnering significant attention for its distinctive design and craftsmanship. The Fiat 1100 Monza’s bodywork was so well-received that it was later adapted for different chassis, highlighting its versatility and appeal. The success of the Monza showcased Riva’s ability to design elegant and innovative coachwork. Despite this initial foray into bespoke automotive design, Riva soon shifted focus towards specialization in hearse production, ultimately becoming one of Italy’s leading manufacturers in that sector. Carrozzeria Riva’s involvement in automotive history extends beyond production. The company was associated with renowned journalist and racer Giovannino Lurani Cernuschi, who initially sought out Riva for vehicle maintenance. Eventually, Lurani commissioned Riva to construct the ‘Nibbio‘ record car in 1935. This project marked Riva’s entry into high-performance and record-breaking vehicles. Lurani also collaborated with Riva in building several Alfa Romeos on the Gilco-Cattaneo chassis. The tube-frame chassis was designed by Guido Cattaneo in partnership with Gilco, a company renowned for providing frames for early Ferrari models. Cattaneo, having access to pre-war Alfa Romeo 2500 SS engines, integrated them into these chassis, producing limited high-performance vehicles. While some of these Alfa Romeo-Cattaneo cars received bodywork from Colli, Riva was also responsible for crafting one or two unique designs following Lurani’s specifications. Following this period of custom car manufacturing, Riva shifted away from constructing original car bodies. Instead, the company focused on the repair and transformation of existing vehicles. This transition marked the company’s evolution into a niche market, ensuring its legacy in the Italian automotive industry through its expertise in specialized vehicle modifications and funeral car production.
