01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari 375 MM Bergman, chassis 0456 AM, is a one-off coupé designed by Aldo Brovarone at Pinin Farina and built in 1954 on the Ferrari 375 MM competition chassis. It was commissioned by film director Roberto Rossellini as a gift for his wife, actress Ingrid Bergman, and is one of the best-known special-bodied Ferraris of the 1950s. The car followed an earlier commission from Rossellini, the Ferrari 375 MM Coupé Speciale (chassis 0402 AM), bodied by Scaglietti. Unlike that car, chassis 0456 AM received a completely new design by Pinin Farina, reflecting the coachbuilder’s evolving approach to aerodynamics and grand touring. The body was finished in Grigio Ingrid, a colour created specifically for Bergman and named in her honour. Its design departed from the contemporary Ferrari production style through the use of a long, uninterrupted bonnet, a wraparound rear window and prominent rear buttresses flowing into the tail. These flying buttresses, integrated with the rear hatch, became the defining feature of the car and anticipated solutions later explored by Pinin Farina on other one-off projects, including the Fiat 8V Speciale. Mechanically, the car retained the standard 375 MM specification, powered by Aurelio Lampredi’s 4.5-litre V12 engine coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox. Although derived from Ferrari’s sports-racing programme, the chassis was adapted for grand touring, combining competition engineering with bespoke coachwork. Chassis 0456 AM made its public debut at the 1954 Paris Motor Show, where it represented Pinin Farina’s vision of a high-performance luxury coupé rather than a competition car. It remains one of only a handful of individually styled Ferraris built on the 375 MM chassis.
