01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari F355 Spider, unveiled in 1995, represented a pinnacle of design and innovation for the marque. Its striking lines, crafted by Pininfarina, were meticulously refined through 1,800 hours in the wind tunnel, ensuring an optimal blend of aerodynamic efficiency and elegant style. This painstaking attention to detail resulted in a car that was not only visually stunning but also capable of cutting through the air with minimal drag. One of the F355 Spider’s most notable advancements was the introduction of an electronically powered semi-automatic soft-top, a first for Ferrari. This innovative feature allowed for a seamless and effortless transition from a closed to an open vehicle, enhancing the driving experience and providing added convenience. Initially, the Spider was available exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission, delivering a pure and engaging driving experience that appealed to enthusiasts. However, in 1997, Ferrari introduced the F1 transmission option for the Spider. This semi-automatic gearbox brought Formula 1 technology to the road, offering faster gear shifts and an even more exhilarating driving experience. The F355 Spider quickly became a beloved model, securing its place as the second-most popular variant of the F355 series. Out of a total production of 3,717 units, 2,664 were equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, reflecting the enduring appeal of traditional gear shifting. The remaining 1,053 units featured the F1 transmission, showcasing Ferrari’s commitment to incorporating cutting-edge technology into its road cars. In summary, the Ferrari F355 Spider stands as a testament to Ferrari’s blend of classic craftsmanship and technological innovation. Its design and performance features continue to captivate car enthusiasts, cementing its status as a celebrated model in Ferrari’s storied history.
