01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 1100 Spider (1955) was a one-off sports car conceived and constructed by Marino Brandoli, combining bespoke engineering with Italian coachbuilding craftsmanship. The car featured an aluminum body designed by Giovanni Michelotti and built by Carrozzeria Motto, reflecting the post-war Italian emphasis on lightness, proportion, and functional elegance. Unlike standard Fiat-based specials of the period, the Fiat 1100 Spider was constructed around a tubular chassis supplied by Gilco, a specialist known for competition-oriented frame design. Power came from a Fiat 1100 S inline-four engine, modified with Marino-brand cylinder heads, underscoring the car’s sporting intent and semi-competition nature. The lightweight chassis and aluminum bodywork contributed to favorable weight distribution and agile handling, aligning with contemporary racing design principles. Stylistically, the Spider displayed streamlined, compact proportions characteristic of mid-1950s Italian sports racers. Michelotti’s design balanced aerodynamic efficiency with visual clarity, avoiding ornamentation in favor of clean surfaces and a low, purposeful stance. The construction methods and materials reflected the experimental ethos of small-scale Italian sports car development during the era. The Fiat 1100 Spider was actively campaigned in endurance competition and was entered in the Mille Miglia in both 1955 and 1956. In the 1955 Mille Miglia, the car finished 13th in class, while its 1956 entry resulted in a retirement. These appearances confirm its role as a genuine competition car rather than a purely stylistic exercise. As a unique prototype, the Fiat 1100 Spider was never intended for series production. Its singular status and documented competition history have secured its place within the broader narrative of Italian postwar coachbuilding. Surviving documentation and archival references identify the car as an important example of collaboration between independent constructors, designers, and specialist suppliers during a formative period in Italian sports car development.
