01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 127 Coupé Moretti was introduced in 1971 by Carrozzeria Moretti as a coachbuilt derivative of the Fiat 127, designed by Dany Brawand. The car adopted a two-door fastback coupé body while retaining the original front-wheel-drive mechanical layout. Unlike most small coupés of the period, it was configured as a five-seater, with a full rear bench and a usable luggage compartment, emphasizing versatility alongside a sport-oriented appearance. The bodyshell was based on the Fiat 127 steel monocoque, with structural reinforcements integrated into the roof and pillars. Overall curb weight was approximately 735 kg. Exterior styling featured clean, restrained lines, a long sloping rear roof section, and large glazed areas. Steel wheels with chromed hubcaps were standard, with alloy wheels offered as an option. Power was supplied by Fiat’s 903 cc inline four-cylinder engine, delivering 47 CV (DIN). The engine was paired with a four-speed manual transmission operated via a floor-mounted lever. Performance figures included a claimed maximum speed of approximately 145 km/h. The suspension system mirrored that of the standard Fiat 127, with independent MacPherson struts at the front and independent rear suspension using trailing arms and coil springs. Braking consisted of front discs and rear drums, operated by a dual-circuit hydraulic system. The interior was upgraded relative to the donor vehicle. Front seats were anatomically shaped and fitted with adjustable headrests compliant with U.S. safety standards. The passenger compartment was fully carpeted, including the luggage area, and the rear seatback could be folded to increase load capacity. The dashboard featured a non-reflective finish to reduce glare, and the steering column was energy-absorbing. A laminated windshield was standard, and mounting points for safety belts were provided. Optional equipment listed in period brochures included metallic paint finishes, tinted or thermal-insulating glass, rear window defogger, temperature gauge, wood-rim or leather steering wheel, alloy wheels, upgraded upholstery, electric accessories, and alarm systems. In addition to the Coupé, Moretti developed the Midimaxi and the Paguro on the Fiat 127 platform, expanding the range to include passenger-commercial and dedicated commercial variants.
