01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 1200 Coupé 2+2 by Carrozzeria Monterosa was a limited-production coachbuilt variant constructed on the Fiat 1200 Granluce platform. It was introduced in 1958 and produced in extremely small numbers by Monterosa, a Turin-based atelier active in bespoke automobile body construction between 1946 and 1961. The model was intended as a compact fixed-roof grand tourer configured in a 2+2 seating arrangement. The donor vehicle, the Fiat 1200 Granluce, was equipped with a front-mounted, inline four-cylinder engine of 1,221 cubic centimetres. The engine employed a single overhead valve design, was water-cooled, and produced approximately 55 horsepower. Power was delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. Suspension consisted of independent front wishbones with coil springs and a live rear axle located by semi-elliptical leaf springs. Drum brakes were fitted at all four wheels. The mechanical specification remained unchanged in the coachbuilt variant. The coupé body was executed in aluminium over a reinforced steel substructure. The design retained proportions consistent with the compact wheelbase of the standard Fiat 1200 but introduced a lower roofline, modified rear section, and a reshaped greenhouse. The styling was conservative, marked by clean surfaces, limited chrome ornamentation, and a restrained application of trim. The roofline terminated in a lightly tapered C-pillar, and the boot was visually integrated into the rear volume of the vehicle. The 2+2 seating configuration provided limited rear accommodation. Carrozzeria Monterosa did not produce vehicles in series, and output was determined by private commissions or show requirements. Fewer than a dozen Fiat 1200-based vehicles are believed to have been bodied by the firm, with only a small subset configured as closed coupés. The number of 2+2 Coupé variants is estimated at fewer than five units. No official chassis register was maintained, and surviving examples are undocumented in detail. The Fiat 1200 Coupé 2+2 Monterosa remains representative of postwar Italian coachbuilding practices applied to mass-market mechanical platforms. It reflects the role of small-scale carrozzerie in producing individualised vehicles with alternative styling interpretations, particularly during the final years of the artisanal coachbuilding tradition in Italy.
