01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Lancia Aurelia B51 Giardiniera Monterosa was a coachbuilt station wagon introduced in 1951, presented at the Turin Motor Show. Constructed by Carrozzeria Monterosa on the Lancia Aurelia B51 chassis, the model represented one of the more utilitarian adaptations of the Aurelia platform during the early 1950s. This iteration retained the mechanical foundation of the B51, featuring a front-mounted 1,754 cc V6 engine, a layout derived from the original V6 engine configuration developed by Lancia under Francesco De Virgilio. Output was rated at approximately 56 horsepower, transmitted to the rear wheels via a column-shifted four-speed manual gearbox. The design approach by Monterosa was characterized by a pragmatic interpretation of estate bodywork, incorporating increased cargo volume and extended roofline while retaining elements of the Aurelia’s front-end identity. The front fascia featured the familiar Lancia grille and integrated headlamp design, although slightly modified to align with the vertical height of the extended bodywork. Chrome trim and minimal ornamentation reflected the subdued styling characteristic of Monterosa’s limited production models. The Giardiniera configuration featured five doors, including a rear tailgate, which emphasized utility without significantly departing from the aesthetic norms of contemporary Italian estate conversions. Interior accommodations were configured for passenger comfort, with adjustments to rear seating and cargo space intended for mixed personal and professional use. The station wagon format remained an uncommon variant in the Italian luxury segment during this period, which contributed to the rarity and limited production of such models. No precise production figures are recorded for the Aurelia B51 Giardiniera Monterosa, though surviving examples are extremely scarce. The model remains notable for its attempt to reconcile Lancia’s refined engineering with practical bodywork in a format rarely adopted for the Aurelia series. It is representative of the transitional phase in early post-war Italian coachbuilding, where bespoke derivatives coexisted with increasingly standardized production vehicles.
