01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Innocenti 750 Michelotti design proposal emerged during an exciting period for Innocenti in the late 1960s. Under the leadership of Luigi Innocenti, son of the company’s founder, Ferdinando Innocenti, the company was successfully producing cars under a licensing agreement with the British Motor Corporation (BMC), notably the “Mini.” However, there was a growing desire within the company to create a car that was entirely designed and built in Italy, aiming to rejuvenate its lineup and assert its independence. To realize this vision, Innocenti tasked two of the most prominent designers of the time, Bertone and Giovanni Michelotti, with developing projects for a small subcompact car targeting the 750 cm³ market segment. This new model was intended to complement the aging “Mini” and offer a fresh, innovative option for consumers. Giovanni Michelotti, renowned for his design brilliance and versatility, presented a proposal that was modern and practical, reflecting his signature style. Michelotti’s design was characterized by clean lines, efficient use of space, and a focus on functionality. His vision aimed to provide a compact yet comfortable vehicle that would appeal to urban drivers and meet the demands of the 1960s automotive market. Despite the strengths of Michelotti’s design, Innocenti ultimately chose the proposal from Nuccio Bertone, which was designed by Marcello Gandini. The Bertone proposal, which led to the production of the Innocenti Mini 90/120, was favored for its bold, stylish design and innovative features that resonated with the spirit of the era. Although Michelotti’s design was not selected for production, it remains a significant part of Innocenti’s history. His proposal showcased his ability to blend practicality with aesthetic appeal, highlighting his impact on automotive design. The process of evaluating both Bertone and Michelotti’s designs underscored Innocenti’s commitment to innovation and excellence in automotive design. Innocenti’s decision to go with the Bertone proposal, resulting in the Innocenti Mini 90/120, marked a notable milestone in the company’s history. It demonstrated how the fusion of Italian design expertise and practical engineering could produce a vehicle that was both functional and visually striking, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of car design.
