01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Nardi Silver Ray, conceived in 1960 and crafted under the design mastery of Giovanni Michelotti, represented a unique fusion of Italian aesthetics and American muscle. Built upon the chassis of the Alfa Romeo 412, this remarkable sports car embodied a captivating blend of heritage and innovation. At the heart of the Silver Ray lay its most intriguing feature: the engine. Powered by a potent 350 cubic inch V8 engine from 1958, paired with two AFB carburetors and a two-speed Powerflite transmission, this machine boasted formidable performance capabilities. The chassis of the Nardi Silver Ray was a composite of the Alfa Romeo 412 Spider Vignale, a vehicle with a poignant history. Originally purchased by Enrico Nardi, the chassis was later disassembled, with its components repurposed for the creation of this singular masterpiece. Despite the bittersweet origins of its foundation, the Nardi Silver Ray stood as a testament to innovation and ingenuity. Also recognized as the Plymouth Silver Ray, this vehicle was part of the esteemed “Ray” series curated by Nardi himself during the 1950s. Preceded by the Blue Rays, Raggio Azzurro I and Raggio Azzurro II, which were meticulously crafted by Carrozzeria Vignale and envisioned by the esteemed Giovanni Michelotti, the Silver Ray held a place of distinction within this lineage of automotive excellence. With its striking design, formidable performance, and rich historical pedigree, the Silver Ray captivated enthusiasts and collectors alike, leaving an indelible mark on the annals of automotive history. As a testament to the vision and creativity of its creators, this extraordinary vehicle remains an enduring symbol of automotive artistry and craftsmanship.
