01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Granturismo, conceived in 2002, is a full-scale design study realized through the collaboration of Lancia Centro Stile, Carrozzeria Maggiora, and Studio Carcerano. Intended as a visual and conceptual exploration rather than a functional prototype, the model reflects an interpretation of Lancia’s grand touring tradition within a contemporary design context. Though based on the mechanical underpinnings of the Lancia Thesis, the Granturismo was presented without an operational drivetrain and served exclusively as a styling exercise. The vehicle’s form emphasizes proportions consistent with front-wheel-drive architecture. A pronounced bonnet extends longitudinally, leading to a cabin enveloped in expansive glazing, intended to enhance the sense of visual continuity between interior and exterior. The frontal treatment is defined by an elongated, sculpted hood terminating in a recessed grille. This element, in concert with vertical headlamps and broad, integrated wings, conveys a forward-driving stance while maintaining references to historic Lancia design idioms. The lateral profile is marked by a continuous line that traverses the flanks and culminates in the rear pillars. This gesture supports a sharply contoured roofline reminiscent of the “High Performance Estate” format, further anchoring the concept in Lancia’s design lineage. The sculptural cohesion between panels and bumper forms a monolithic visual language, eschewing ornamentation in favor of volume and surface expression. Retroactive cues evoke earlier Lancia models such as the Aprilia and Ardea, though reinterpreted within a modern idiom. The dimensions of the Granturismo measure approximately 4,620 millimetres in length, 1,920 in width, and 1,410 in height. These metrics, while generous, are not excessive, and the overall stance communicates elegance rather than mass. No interior or mechanical specifications were furnished, as the project did not extend beyond the visual domain. Though not pursued to production, the Granturismo concept played a role in informing subsequent design language for the marque, including elements seen in the Stilnovo concept introduced the following year. As a static design proposal, it stands as a document of Lancia’s stylistic ambitions in the early 21st century—at once retrospective in spirit and prospective in execution.
