01 / THE STORY

History & context

Based on the legendary Fiat 500, the Maggiora 995 TC was a striking reinterpretation presented at the Turin Motor Show, long before Fiat itself unveiled a modern version of its iconic city car. Built by Carrozzeria Maggiora, the Turin-based specialist with deep ties to the Fiat Group, this prototype reflected the craftsmanship and creativity that had long defined Italian coachbuilding. Visually, the 995 TC stood out for its distinctive modifications. The redesigned red front bumper integrated two asymmetrical air intakes near the radiator, crafted from lightweight plastic to reduce weight. Along the sides, unique moldings accentuated the car’s compact silhouette, while the right-side fuel cap adopted an aeronautical-style design. The rear windows were partially covered with a white film, giving the car a sporty, almost racing-inspired touch. At the back, a vivid red spoiler framed the tailgate, complemented by a larger rear bumper and a triangular exhaust tip—details that hinted at performance. The lowered stance, firmer suspension springs, and 15-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P7 Corsa tires gave the 995 TC an aggressive, track-ready look, even if its heart remained the standard 900 cc engine. Inside, the cockpit combined functional sportiness with Italian flair. The two-tone dashboard—light grey and red—featured a textured finish, while the bucket seats recalled those of vintage racing cars. A reinforced roll bar replaced the rear seat bench, and twin fiberglass domes framed the integrated headrests. Even a small compartment for a racing helmet was cleverly built into the rear section. Finishing touches included red fabric door panels, a three-spoke Fusina leather steering wheel, an anatomical gear knob, and drilled metal pedals. Though mechanically modest, the Maggiora 995 TC offered a sharper, more enjoyable drive, embodying the spirit of Italian automotive passion and the legacy of Maggiora—one of the last true artisans of Turin’s golden era of coachbuilding.
