01 / THE STORY

History & context

The OSCA 1600, designed by Giovanni Michelotti, is a fascinating piece of automotive history, marking an early example of Michelotti’s distinctive design vision following the establishment of his own studio in 1959. This prototype was an ambitious project, showcasing a unique blend of engineering and styling that reflects both Michelotti’s innovative approach and the technical expertise of the Maserati brothers. Built on a Fiat chassis, the OSCA 1600 featured a 1600 cc engine that was significantly modified by the Maserati brothers. The engine boasted a new head, cams, and induction system, with dual Weber carburetors positioned between the valve covers in the center of the head—a configuration that was both distinctive and technically sophisticated. This unique setup contributed to the car’s performance and set it apart from other vehicles of its time. The body design of the OSCA 1600 GT Michelotti was crafted to serve as a two-seater touring car, complete with space for luggage behind the seats. It featured a Pagoda-style roof, a design element that would later become iconic in the Mercedes-Benz SL class. Additionally, the car’s rear indicator lights were integrated into the rear of the front wings, further emphasizing its innovative design. The prototype garnered significant attention when it was presented at major automotive events in Geneva, Paris, and Turin. Each appearance saw the car adorned in a different livery, showcasing its versatility and the potential for customization. Despite the initial excitement, the OSCA 1600’s journey took a turn when the car was disassembled and subsequently abandoned in Florida. Fortunately, the prototype was rediscovered and underwent a meticulous restoration, bringing it back to its original red and black color scheme. This restoration preserved the car’s distinctive features and historical significance, ensuring that the OSCA 1600 remains a testament to Giovanni Michelotti’s early work and the innovative spirit of the Maserati brothers. The OSCA 1600 GT Michelotti stands as a rare and valuable artifact, representing a unique intersection of design and engineering from a pivotal moment in automotive history. Its restoration not only highlights its historical importance but also celebrates Michelotti’s creative vision and the technical achievements of the Maserati brothers.
