01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Autobleu 4CV is a limited-production French coupé derived from the Renault 4CV chassis, reimagined and assembled during the early to mid-1950s. Created under the direction of the Paris-based firm Autobleu, the vehicle represents a confluence of industrial engineering and artisanal coachbuilding during a period of reconstruction and stylistic evolution in postwar Europe. Autobleu, founded in 1950 by Maurice Mestivier and Roger Lepeytre, initially specialized in the manufacture of performance components, particularly intake and exhaust systems for Renault engines. This technical background informed the conception of a more refined and performance-oriented version of the popular 4CV. The bodywork of the Autobleu 4CV was designed by Carrozzeria Ghia of Turin, whose stylistic language emphasized fluid forms, extended proportions, and a departure from the utilitarianism of the donor vehicle. Early examples were built by Carrosserie Pourtout; however, the majority of production units, including a small number of convertibles, were completed by the atelier of Henri Chapron, who was then at the height of his influence in French custom coachbuilding. Mechanically, the vehicle remained faithful to the Renault 4CV layout, retaining its rear-mounted, water-cooled inline-four engine. However, the Autobleu version was equipped with enhanced components, including an Autobleu-designed intake manifold and upgraded carburetion—typically a Solex unit—yielding modest but tangible performance gains over the original configuration. These modifications, while restrained, aligned with Autobleu’s ethos of functional refinement. Interior appointments reflected an emphasis on elevated craftsmanship, often incorporating higher-grade materials, custom instrumentation, and additional chrome detailing. The cabin layout, though compact, was executed with attention to both comfort and aesthetic coherence. Estimates suggest that approximately eighty examples were constructed, placing the Autobleu 4CV among the rarer postwar French coachbuilt automobiles. Its significance lies less in numerical impact than in its articulation of an alternative automotive path—one in which a mass-market platform served as the foundation for a vehicle of individualized character and discreet luxury. The Autobleu 4CV endures as a representative expression of mid-century French design culture, situated at the intersection of performance tuning, industrial collaboration, and coachbuilt tradition.
