01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Maserati Mistral Spyder, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1964, is a remarkable and rare convertible version of the Maserati Mistral Coupé. The Mistral was introduced as Maserati’s successor to the Sebring, and the Spyder variant quickly became one of the most iconic and coveted models in Maserati’s history. Designed by the talented Pietro Frua, the Mistral Spyder features a sleek, modern body with some distinctive design elements that set it apart from other cars of the era. The car’s steel body was complemented by lightweight alloy front and rear bonnets and doors, keeping the overall weight down while still maintaining strength and durability. For those seeking additional refinement, Maserati offered a rare, optional hardtop, which was also made from aluminum. This hardtop added versatility to the car, giving drivers the option to enjoy the open-air experience of the Spyder or to enclose themselves in the protection of a fully enclosed roof. One of the standout features of the Mistral Spyder’s design is its unique domed glass tailgate. This feature initially caught attention for its unconventional appearance but has since been praised as a bold and futuristic touch that contributed to the car’s overall elegance and style. The Mistral is now considered one of Frua’s finest designs, combining both beauty and sophistication in a way that was ahead of its time. Under the hood, the Mistral Spyder was powered by Maserati’s renowned double-cam, straight-six engine. Initially, the engine had a 3.5-liter displacement, but over the course of production, it was upgraded to 3.7 and finally 4.0 liters, providing excellent power and performance. The engine, originally developed for motor racing, gave the Mistral Spyder impressive speed and agility, while maintaining a refined, luxurious driving experience. With only 125 Mistral Spyders built before production ended in 1970, the car is incredibly rare and continues to be highly sought after by collectors and automotive enthusiasts. Its striking design, coupled with Maserati’s legendary engineering, makes the Mistral Spyder one of the most cherished models in Maserati’s storied legacy. Today, the Maserati Mistral Spyder is regarded as a true jewel in the Maserati crown and a testament to Pietro Frua’s skillful design.
