01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Maserati Auge, a design concept conceived by the talented Gioacchino Acampora during his architecture degree at Politecnico di Milano in 1996, stands as a testament to the fusion of innovation and tradition in the automotive world. Supported by Maserati’s Chief Executive Eugenio Alzati and Fiat’s Nevio Di Giusto, the Auge emerged from the collaboration with Carrozzeria Castagna, utilizing the Quattroporte V8 ‘Evoluzione’ chassis and a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, pushing out an impressive 450 bhp. Acampora envisioned the Auge as a refreshing wind, a harbinger of change blowing along the Côte d’Azure, symbolizing a shift in seasons and a renewal of identity. Beyond being a modern luxury coupe, the Auge is a meticulous exploration of history and traditional style, delving into the methods governing the creative and productive process. The design philosophy revolves around answering pivotal questions: What defines niche products in the automotive industry, and how should they be crafted? The Auge seeks to modernize production methods while staying true to the essence of luxury and craftsmanship. The design team employed a blend of traditional and contemporary approaches, emphasizing human touch over excessive reliance on computer-science devices. The exterior of the Auge embodies a ‘Gran Turismo’ spirit, reminiscent of the iconic 5000 GTs from the late fifties. Crafted from aluminum and carbon fiber, the body conceals a modern Maserati ‘Quattroporte Evoluzione’ with a V-8 3200 cc engine, showcasing a seamless integration of heritage and cutting-edge technology. Striking features, such as large MOMO wheels, air inlets, and ‘NACA’ intakes, not only enhance aesthetics but also contribute to performance and aerodynamics. The unique color scheme, blending warm brass with a cold silver varnish, adds a distinctive touch, paying homage to specialist cars of the past. The interior is a luxurious space, with Connolly handcrafted materials, Prima Classe woven material, walnut wood, and glazed brass. The dashboard features classic instrumentation with silver settings, evoking a sense of aeronautical elegance. The cockpit, a blend of tradition and modernity, integrates multimedia systems seamlessly, ensuring a state-of-the-art travel experience. The transparent roof, using “glass-room technology,” provides passengers with a panoramic view while maintaining comfort through heat and noise insulation. The rear luggage compartment, complete with suitcases and accessories, reflects a commitment to both style and practicality. In essence, the Maserati Auge is not just a car; it’s a narrative of innovation, craftsmanship, and a bridge between the automotive past and future.
