01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 600 Spider Capri made its debut at the 1959 Turin Auto Show, presented by Carrozzeria Caprera alongside a sedan model named Amalfi. This stylish open-top vehicle immediately captured attention with its distinctive design, which combined elegance with a sporty character. Following its successful introduction, Carrozzeria Caprera decided to move forward with limited production in 1960, utilizing the Fiat 600D platform as its foundation. The production version of the Fiat 600 Spider Capri featured several refinements compared to the prototype displayed at the Turin Auto Show. Key modifications included a revised front design and subtle changes to smaller details like the tail lights, which were adjusted to enhance both aesthetic appeal and practicality for road use. Despite these changes, the Capri retained the striking look that had made the prototype so appealing. Carrozzeria Caprera’s choice to produce the Capri was a testament to the model’s attractive design and its anticipated popularity among car enthusiasts. Although only a limited number of these cars were produced, the Fiat 600 Spider Capri remains a notable example of Italian automotive design from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Its combination of stylish appearance and the dependable Fiat 600D mechanics has cemented its status as a desirable classic. Today, the Capri is cherished by collectors and enthusiasts for its unique charm and historical significance in the evolution of Italian sports cars.
