01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 600 Coupé by Carrozzeria Boano was introduced as a limited-production model in 1955 and publicly shown at the Salone dell’Automobile di Torino that same year. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, this version was based on the newly launched Fiat 600 chassis and was intended as a more refined, closed-roof alternative to the open-topped special-bodied variants of the period. The Boano interpretation retained the original Fiat 600’s compact proportions and rear-engine layout but introduced a fixed-roof coupé configuration with significantly revised body panels. The roofline featured a wraparound rear window, while the side profile was marked by a clean shoulder line and simple, flush-mounted doors. The front and rear designs were mildly altered from the production 600, with dual round headlamps and a modest central grille detail replacing the more utilitarian styling of the standard model. Wheel covers and whitewall tyres contributed to an upscale appearance. The vehicle’s interior layout followed the basic configuration of the standard Fiat 600 but featured improved upholstery materials and bespoke detailing, in line with Boano’s typical approach to limited coachbuilding. The dashboard design remained minimal but was slightly reconfigured, potentially incorporating higher-grade instrumentation or trim. Although the mechanical specifications were not publicly altered from the standard Fiat 600, the car likely retained the 633 cc rear-mounted inline-four engine coupled with a four-speed manual gearbox. This powertrain was characteristic of the early 600 series, prioritizing compactness and reliability over performance. The production volume of the Fiat 600 Coupé Boano is undocumented but is generally considered to have been limited, possibly restricted to a handful of units or prototypes. This body style did not proceed to series production, remaining primarily a showpiece and design study. It represented one of several early coachbuilt experiments exploring how to adapt the Fiat 600 platform into more stylish or upmarket variants in the mid-1950s.
